It was the first time I'd gone back to that part of the farm. I set up almost exactly in the same place where last year I saw the most spectacular rutting whitetail buck I had seen in years. A beautiful typical 10 pt. with excellent mass, more than 2" past his ears, bez tines at least 11" long, the neck of a prizefighter, the confident air of a champion. And he stood posed at 20 yards, broadside, intent on the doe ahead. The wind was mine and I had an open shooting lane to his vitals. But he picked me. Perhaps he heard the muffled cursing. More likely he caught my movement as I groped for a second arrow.
